ABSTRACT
Prof. Tyshchenko’s Linguistic Encyclopaedia 42 Epochs of Ukrainian Language Contacts has contributed to Oriental studies. This book has found its grateful readers among philologists, historians, and the professional orientalist community.
The linguistic and historical facts of the scholar’s work are arranged on the basis of Professor Martynov’s concept, according to which the number of epochs experienced by a language is determined by the number of neighbouring languages with which it has been in contact. Before compiling the encyclopaedic volume, the author devoted separate monographs and their parts to the study of linguistic features of our ancestors’ historical contacts with the Celts (2006, 2008), Goths (2015), Arabs (2005-2021) and Scandinavians (2011), as well as southern influences of Hellenistic and early Christian times (2016). Several articles cover Arabic and Armenian linguistic contacts (2020). All these areas of research are collected and reflected to varying degrees in the final work. While the scholar’s earlier monographs and articles offered parts of a new cognitive model of Ukrainian linguistic history, the encyclopedia presents a streamlined field of knowledge, its large blocks, and several of their oriental components.
