ABSTRACT
The evolution of language systems at the present stage is determined by simultaneous processes of simplification of morphological structure and complication of semantic and communicative connections. Specialised terms, lexical borrowings, and abbreviations denoting complex concepts are increasingly permeating the information space, and the structure of communicative messages is also becoming more complex, adapting to the communicative needs of the modern information society. In this context, it is quite natural for linguistic research to focus on the analysis of the functional, semantic, and pragmatic parameters of terms.
The authors focus primarily on defining the multifunctional nature of Spanish medical terms. This study aims to analyse the pragmatic potential of Spanish medical terms used in the Spanish periodicals ABC and El País. The study shows that the typical functions of Spanish medical terms in the mass media context are nominative, indicative, informative, emotive, impressive, vocative, admonitive, ideological, content-enhancing, positioning and attention-grabbing. The proposed study has also shown that the use of medical terms in publicistic texts is intended not only to interest the reader in current social or political topics, but also to affectively influence them and encourage them to reflect on the evaluative and associative aspects highlighted by the author in the article. The results of the study open up prospects for further research into Spanish medical terms as multifunctional lexical units and their pragmatic potential in other types of discourse, such as literary or colloquial.
Keywords: Spanish medical terms, pragmatic functions, determinologisms, publicistic discourse, lexical meaning.
