ABSTRACT
The article explores the peculiarities of term formation in the field of civil protection in English and Ukrainian, emphasizing their structural, semantic, and functional characteristics. The study underscores the growing importance of terminology studies in the context of globalization, rapid technological development, and international cooperation, particularly in safety and emergency management. Special attention is given to modernizing and standardizing civil protection terminology to ensure effective professional communication and alignment with global practices. The research examines the nature of terminological creation, including derivation, compounding, abbreviation, and borrowings. Comparative analysis reveals similarities and differences in the formation of terms in English and Ukrainian, demonstrating that both languages actively employ affixation, compounding, and semantic derivation, though with varying productivity. Borrowings from English are highlighted as a significant source of enrichment for Ukrainian civil protection terminology, reflecting Ukraine’s integration into the European and international scientific and educational space. The study outlines translation strategies for rendering English civil protection terms into Ukrainian, identifies the most common patterns, and evaluates their adequacy and consistency. By analyzing authentic terminology from NATO directives, civil protection documentation, and academic sources, a list of examples has been compiled and classified by formation and translation methods, and the challenges of ensuring precision and clarity in professional communication are discussed. The findings demonstrate that effective translation and formation of civil protection terminology not only contribute to linguistic development but also play a critical role in fostering international collaboration in the civil protection sphere.
