ABSTRACT

The article is devoted to the peculiarities of the use and origin of the names of Cossack cold steel and firearms of the 15th – 18th centuries, recorded in historical and chronicle monuments of the selected period. The study used a descriptive method (to identify the semantic content, main features, and variability of words) and a comparative historical method (to establish parallels between the functioning of names in the modern period and the chosen historical paradigm). The material of the study was 39 lexemes for Cossack cold steel and firearms of the 15th – 18th centuries (19 of them for Cossack cold steel and 20 for firearms). To select the names of the weapons, we used chronicle monuments: Lviv Chronicle, Samovydets Chronicle, Ostroh Chronicler, and F. Sofonovych’s Chronicle of the Ancient Chroniclers.

The article highlights the peculiarities of the spoken language of the chosen historical period, recorded in writing, the assimilation or non-assimilation of the peculiarities of the Cossack weaponry, in particular as evidence of the owner’s status or an attribute of the pomp of the events of that time. The study of the chosen thematic group is important for analyzing the evolution of the Ukrainian language and forming a harmonious portrait of a national linguistic personality.

Key words: Ukrainian language of the 15th – 18th centuries, names of Cossack weapons, donor language, borrowings, synonyms.
