AN ATTEMPT OF LINGUAL AND EXTRALINGUAL CULTURAL REFERENCES CLASSIFICATION IN THE TRANSLATION OF ADULT ANIMATION

ABSTRACT

The current article analyses extralingual (ECR) and intralingual (ICR) cultural references in the context of audiovisual translation, particularly the film text of animated series for the adult audience. The article examines the key concepts of cultural references, provides existing classifications and proposes the author’s categorization of the references based on original film texts and Ukrainian translations of animated series for the adult audience.

Descriptive, comparative and interpretation of theories and models of different researchers methods were used for the analysis. The analyzed material and theoretical background provide grounds for creating our own classification of cultural references based on previous studies of audiovisual translation researchers. This classification includes extralingual cultural references (onomastic, literary and artistic, political and historical, references of Internet-culture, references of pop-culture, references from social and everyday life) and intralingual cultural references (fixed expressions, wordplay/puns, profanity/obscene vocabulary, slang/jargon, character idiolect).

The further research presupposes the empirical analysis of the corpus of original film texts and translations of animated series for adult audience, as well as the experiment with the target audience to preserve the communicative effect of translations.
